For those who missed it, on the SNS linked above, I solicited requests for an online mental health first aid kit, a concept I had read about several years earlier. The idea behind this is 1) that mental health emergencies are real and require treatment; 2) that such emergencies can be as varied as those injuries and conditions experienced in the rest of the body; and 3) can be treated at home unless or until escalation to medical services is required.
The contents of a mental health first aid kit are different enough from other first aid kits that some of their contents can be compiled and made available online for common use. These suggestions are only suggestions; your kit needs to reflect and be comprised of objects and techniques that work for you, and ideally are non-pharmacologic in nature. Please consider the ideas in the thread as a jumping-off point for your own kit.
Thank you to everyone who contributed what works for them. I found some of your suggestions personally useful, and I believe that all of them will prove beneficial to our Jezebel community as a whole. If anyone has more ideas to contribute, please post them here as a resource for everyone who is in need of care.
Here are two more additions I thought of in the days since I began this thread:
1. The 4-7-8 breathing technique, which has been shown to reduce anxiety and stage fright in people with storied careers in the theater, music, and public speaking. It can also help you fall asleep faster. Breathing techniques like this one are important strategies to have when you experience the onset of anxiety symptoms away from the comfortable and familiar.
2. The song “Weightless,” by Marconi Union, was composed in collaboration with neuroscientists and mental health experts, and has been shown in clinical studies to significantly reduce anxiety symptoms within minutes. (More links in the latter link.)
